Element Electronics to Make TVs in U.S.   1/1/0001 12:00:00 AM

Element Electronics, primarily a maker of budget-priced LCD TVs that are sold through Costco, Target, Walmart, and QVC, is planning an interesting move. It plans to shift assembly of 46-inch and larger LCD TVs from China to the U.S.. Yep, you read that right, if Element's plan comes to complete fruition, TVs, at least some of them, will come out of a U.S. factory.

Element's President and Owner, Michael O'Shaughnessy, has calculated that with rising costs in China and the cost of shipping, it is actually now economically attractive to bring production of large screen LCD TVs to the U.S. Of course, this doesn't mean that others will follow suit, but if Element is successful with its initial 100 worker plant, it will continue to expand. Hopefully, that will inspire other companies to bring at least a portion of consumer electronics manufacturing back to U.S. shores. For more on this story, read the report from Detroit Free Press.

Panasonic Latest to Announce Huge Losses   1/1/0001 12:00:00 AM

On the heels of Sony and Sharp announcing big financial losses this past year, Panasonic has also announced that they have lost $10 Billion dollars. Panasonic officials point to continued price erosion in TVs, as well as the recent floods in Thailand, as major factors in its financial misfortune, and the Japan earthquake and tsunami didn't help either. Also, Panasonic spent a large sum to aquire Sanyo.

As a result of all these factors, Panasonic is pursuing an austerity program that includes the closure of two TV plants in Japan, as well as reorganizing some of their other divisions. For more details, read the report from Bloomberg News/Business Week.
