Specifications reviewed September 2026. Manufacturers revise hardware within a product name, and board partners vary the port mix on graphics cards — confirm against your specific model before buying a cable.
How to check the ports on your own device
- Look at the port itself. The Connector Identifier works out which connector you are looking at from its shape.
- HDMI version is not printed on the port. There is no way to tell HDMI 2.0 from HDMI 2.1 by looking — you have to check the device's specifications.
- On Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display to see the active resolution, refresh rate, and which output is in use.
- On a Mac, hold Option and click the Apple menu → System Information → Graphics/Displays.
- USB-C is the exception to trust. A USB-C port only carries video if it supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt — look for the DisplayPort or Thunderbolt logo beside it, and see USB-C as a display cable.

What HDMI version does the PS5 have?
The PlayStation 5 has a single HDMI 2.1 port. It can output 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz, and supports VRR and ALLM.
Reaching 4K at 120 Hz requires an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable — the one supplied in the box. An older High Speed cable will cap the console at a lower mode or drop the signal altogether, which is the most common cause of a PS5 refusing to offer 120 Hz.
Does the MacBook Air have an HDMI port?
No. No MacBook Air has an HDMI port. It drives external displays over its Thunderbolt / USB-C ports, so you need a USB-C to HDMI adapter or a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.
The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro do have a built-in HDMI port. How many external displays a Mac can drive depends on its chip tier rather than on the cable you use.
Do RTX 40 series cards have DisplayPort 2.1?
No. GeForce RTX 40 series cards use DisplayPort 1.4a, not 2.1 — a common point of confusion, since the same cards carry HDMI 2.1.
On that generation HDMI 2.1 is actually the higher-bandwidth output: about 42.67 Gbit/s usable, against 25.92 Gbit/s for DisplayPort 1.4a. Both reach 4K at 240 Hz with DSC. DisplayPort 2.1b at UHBR20 arrived with the RTX 50 series, and needs a DP80 certified cable to run at full rate.
How do I tell if my HDMI port is 2.0 or 2.1?
You cannot tell by looking. HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1 use physically identical connectors, and the version is almost never printed on the device. Check the manufacturer's specifications for your exact model number.
As an indirect test, open your display settings and see whether 4K at 120 Hz is offered: that mode needs HDMI 2.1 at full color. Cables are the same story — there is no such thing as an “HDMI 2.1 cable,” only cable speed ratings.
Can a Nintendo Switch output video without the dock?
Not with a plain USB-C cable. Both the Switch and the Switch 2 send video to a TV through the dock, which is where the HDMI output lives.
Some third-party USB-C hubs do work, but many do not: the console is particular about the USB-C power delivery and video negotiation it expects, and a hub that gets it wrong produces a blank screen. The official dock is the reliable route.
